The Legacy of Homer's Ice Cream

An institution in the Wilmette area is Homer’s Ice Cream.

One of my high school friends’ family owned it, the Poulos family.

His dad and uncle ran the store for many years. Before their uncle and dad, it was founded by their grandfather, Papa Gus.

Todd and Craig Poulos recently bought Homer’s and have great plans to make it even greater than before.

My family, Sarah, Finn, my niece Katie, and I recently went to Homer’s to visit our friend Todd. He took us in the back and showed us their ice cream making operation. They make over 30 different flavors fresh every day.

Their ingredients are of the highest quality. But they use low air while making their ice cream. This means their ice cream is very dense with low amounts of air incorporated into the product, making a creamier more flavorful product.

We learned all this when we visited their production facility.

The kids had a blast and Finn wanted to know when he could work there.

I’ve been going to Homer’s for over 40 years. It’s a family-owned business and you feel it the moment you walk in. Many of their customers are greeted by name from Homer’s team members.

They are regulars and a lot of them have been going there since they were kids. That’s a part of the experience.

They provide a great product and have great love for their customers.

Unfortunately, we see this kind of business model in dentistry less and less. Today, the model that is growing by leaps and bounds is the corporate model.

A corporation will buy a family-owned dental office, keep the name to make it feel like a family-owned business and then hire a bunch of dentists to provide the dentistry.

A lot of times you see a different dentist each time you come in. If you do finally find a dentist that you like, that dentist will be gone the next time you go in and you’re assigned a new dentist.

This lack of consistency with care is very stressful. Once you get used to a dentist, they are no longer able to see you and you’re on a mission to find a new dentist that you like. So frustrating!

At Dente, we still have the good ol’ fashioned dental office.

This is the framework:

A dentist opens his office from scratch, he builds a practice of consistent quality and care for his patients, he develops a loyal following and a great reputation in the community and treats the same patients for decades.

That is the same idea that I built Dente from. I opened Dente from scratch almost 20 years ago. We grew our office from zero patients to over 2,000 patients today. Some of our patients will drive from the farthest parts of Chicago and Indiana suburbs to see us.

And some of you may ask, why do they drive so far? The ultimate answer is that THEY TRUST US.
