One of the drawbacks of working in dentistry is the physical conditions people eventually get from years of doing repetitive motion and bad posture.
For me it’s my back. The years of poor posture in my field have caused a bulging disc in L4-L5. When I get flair ups, I’ll go to physical therapy, and I will improve dramatically.
The physical therapy is usually for a few months, twice a week. When you go there, you will meet other people. And you know me, I’m a chatter boxand talk to everyone.
I begin to ask them what kind of injury they have and how they got the injury. A lot of the people there were high school athletes that had some type of sports injury.
While I was there, I learned that there was a sport that had an overwhelmingly high number of injuries and it’s not the sport you would expect.
Most people would think that most of the injuries come from sports like football, lacrosse, wrestling or hockey. Sports that had a lot of physical contact.
Shockingly, the sport that had the most serious injuries was cheerleading.
One girl was thrown up in the air, and her teammate didn’t catch her. She landed on her back right on the ground. She developed back pain and numbness down her leg.
Another one got kicked in the head by another girl doing a back flip. She developed a concussion and had vertigo.
And there was the typical knee injury from the tumbling aspect of cheer.

In a million years, I would never suspect cheerleading as being so injury prone.
Until I saw it, I wouldn’t have believed it. A lot of times we need to see things in person before we can imagine it.
La odontología no es diferente.
For most people, cosmetic changes are difficult to imagine. Changing the size, shape, and color of the teeth can dramatically change a person's face and look. Sometimes it's for the better, but other times it could make the person look worse or a more exaggerated look.
We see this a lot of times with Hollywood actors that have exaggerated, oversized teeth that are too white and too big. They look unnatural and it’s obvious that they have FAKE teeth.
My view of a great cosmetic change is when someone comes up to you and notices an improvement in your appearance but is unable to pinpoint the change.
They’ll ask you things like, “Did you lose weight?” Or “Did you change your hair?” and things like that. But they are not sure what the change was.

This, to me, is the perfect cosmetic change.
But we know that being able to imagine if the cosmetic changes will be a positive or a negative one, is the hard part to imagine.
That is why we create a prototype of cosmetic changes with each of our cosmetic cases. This gives the patient the ability to look at the changes directly in their mouth, before they make any permanent decisions to move forward with their cosmetic treatment.
